Community banks often find it
difficult to provide international payment services. Yet, the demand for
international drafts, wires, foreign currency forwards, encashment of
foreign receipts and even foreign exchange grows daily as global trade
becomes an increasingly important part of the business of companies both
large and small.
The reason so few community banks
offer these services is simple: the cost of establishing proprietary
programs is prohibitive unless very large volumes are transferred.
Further, expertise is essential to succeed in the ever-changing world of
currency markets. Providing such services falls outside the core
competencies of most community banks.
Nevertheless, as a company's need for
these services grows, so does the likelihood that they will go elsewhere
to get them - and that is how you start to lose a customer! A competing,
usually larger, bank that starts out by providing international payment
services may soon see if there are other services they can offer your
once loyal customer.
There is, however, a way for you to
provide these services without investing in costly infrastructure,
without exposing your bank to currency market fluctuations, and without
putting customer relationships on the line: Great Lakes Bankers Bank.
